The Department of Writing Arts and the College of Communication at Rowan University invites you to the 2012 Harrah's Emerging Writers Series Presentation:

"In Movement: Re-thinking/Re-presenting Composing Processes"
Jody Shipka, PhD
Associate Professor of English
University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Dr. Shipka is the author of Toward a Composition Made Whole (2011), which Geoffrey Sirc in the pages of College Composition and Communication called "the most compelling study of student writers since Janet Emig's [1971] Composing Process of Twelfth Graders." And that "There is no failure of imagination in Shipka's pedagogy: she affords her students some of the most dazzling occasions for writing I've ever read." In other words, it is a phenomenal book and her talk will be informed by the what she discusses within. I have attached Sirc's review, which begins on the bottom of page 513 (it's a multiple book review).

Presentation Description:
In this talk from one of the leading and most innovative voices in the area of visual composition, Dr. Shipka illuminates the complex and often hidden processes composers use when creating a piece of work. By featuring numerous visual texts, Shipka makes visible the cycles of activity that link the production, distribution, exchange, consumption and valuation of texts. Ultimately, Shipka argues that the densely layered and highly distributed processes found within otherwise seemingly straight-forward composing tasks have significant practical and theoretical implications for people who compose in digital and analog media.

Dr. Shipka's talk will benefit faculty and students in all areas of visual composition (visual arts, RTF, writing arts, and so on) who are working with or teaching students how to conduct research or create meaning using moving and still images.
