PHILADELPHIA'S 40th ANNUAL GREAT BOOKS

FALL INSTITUTE WEEKEND

THE INN AT POCONO MANOR NOVEMBER 5, 6, 7, 2010

Join us this fall in the Poconos to explore
The Raptures and Ravages of Love

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
Phedre by Jean Racine
Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

Our discussion starts with Ernest Hemingway's classic American novel, A Farewell to Arms, a love story about an American ambulance lieutenant and an English nurse, based on Hemingway's own experiences on the Italian front during World War I.

Next, we examine the myth of Phaedra as portrayed by Jean Racine in his seventeenth century French drama, Phedre. The obsessive love of Phedre for her stepson, Hippolyus, is recognized as one of the great dramas of tragic infatuation. It has been exquisitely translated by the English poet, Ted Hughes.

Finally, we end our weekend with Gustave Flaubert's classic nineteenth century masterpiece, Madame Bovary. Join us as we explore The Raptures and Ravages of Love, and feel free to invite a friend.
